Italian Navy Cavour (550)aircraft carrier (CVH) was commissioned March 27, 2008.The Conte di Cavour has more than twice the displacement tonnage as the Garibaldi class (26,000 tons versus 13,000 tons). The new carrier is expected to operate the f35 Joint Strike Fighter, when available, as well as the current air wing of AV-8B Harrier II jump jets and assorted helicopters.
Full Operational Capability (FOC) is expected in early 2009 after completion of finishing work and transfer to the new naval station on Mar Grande in Taranto. Cavour will be the new flagship of the Italian Navy.
