Powered by new steam turbines she had a top speed of 21 knots, 3 knots faster than battleships with traditional piston engines.
it launched a naval arms race between Britain and Germany of unprecedented size and scope. Striving to build bigger and more powerful warships

Dreadnought is a generic name given to all subsequent battleships after the original HMS Dreadnoughts launch, due to the massive design shift.

Prevous battleships had for some time been in a standard layout of main armament in two main turrets at either end of the ship (or in 4 single turrets in the case of the French ships using the lozenge, or diamond layout) with the secondary armament either in casemates or in later ones like the British King Edward VII in turrets at midships. Having a heavy secondary battery was later found to make fire control near impossible due to not being able to tell the difference between the fall of 12inch and 10 or 9.2inch shot.

The Dreadnought type battleships had all big gun armament, and hence are all designated Dreadnoughts, regardless of different states calling them 'Fast Battleships', 'Super Battleships' or anything else, they are still Dreadnoughts, or Dreadnought type battleships, age or place of manufacture has no relevance, it's the fundamental shift in design that makes them Dreadnoughts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
